Biography of General Elrick Izastorza

Born at Maillezais in the Vendée on 29th September 1950. Married with 2 children.

Career shared between operational assignments (regiments and military staff), assignments to organic military staff (logistics, organisation and management of human resources) and training schools.

Made Major General of the French Army on 1 August 2006 then Army Chief of Staff on 3 July 2008.

 

Academic career :

  • 1961 - 1970: Military Training Schools at Autun then Aix en Provence ;
  • 1970 - 1972: Saint-cyr special military college, Général de Gaulle graduate class ;
  • 1972 - 1973: Montpellier French Infantry Military Academy ;
  • 1986: obtained DEA (Master of Advanced Studies) in international defence and relations;
  • 1987 – 1989: Higher military school and higher inter-army studies.

Operational unit and general staff career :

  • 1973 - 1976: combat section leader of the 3rd RIMa at Vannes ;
  • 1976 - 1978: combat section leader then  company combat second-in-command at the 2nd RPIMa in la Réunion ;
  • 1978 - 1982: combat company second-in-command then unit commander at the 8th RPIMa at Castres (operation Tacaud in Chad) ;
  • 1989 - 1991: head of operations office and instruction of RIMaP-NC in Nouméa ;
  • 1991 - 1993: head of army corps for the 8th RPIMa in Castres (Commander of the 1st battalion of the APRONUC in Cambodia) ;
  • 2004 - 2005: assistant to the general commanding the land forces in Lille;
  • 2005 – 2006: commanding officer for operation Licorne in the Ivory Coast.

Career in training organisations :

  • 1983 - 1985: commanding officer for the military training centre for parachutists of the 54e DMT at Montpellier ;
  • 2002 - 2004: commanding officer at the Montpellier French Infantry Military Academy.

Career in administrative military staff :

  • 1985 - 1987: logistics office of the military staff of the 3rd RM in Rennes ;
  • 1993 - 1996: organisation-staff office of the army military staff (more particularly in charge of  professionalization) ;
  • 1996 - 2000: military staff office head for the military staff department for the Army then head of the director’s staff;
  • 2000 - 2002: deputy director for recruitment to the DPMAT.

Army General Irastorza who was admitted to the second section on 1 September 2011, is a Senior Officer in the Legion of Honour, Commander of the National Order of Merit and holder of the Cross for Military Valour with 4 citations.
